Introduction
William Thackeray was a writer, journalist, painter and printmaker at the same time. However, real success and recognition came to him after a publication of the serialized novel “The Vanity Fair”, which became a bestseller even before the story was finished. I have chosen this author for my first paper because last summer I read “The Vanity Fair”, and was so deeply impressed by this book, that decided to undertake a personal research into Victorian age in general and on William Thackeray in particular, in order to get a better-understanding of his great masterpiece. When I found out that this writer was on the list of authors for “Metodos del studio de la literature Inglesa” my decision was evident. I expected that my previous knowledge would prevent me from having any kind of difficulties while preparing this paper, but it had escaped me, that most of the information I had on this topic was far from being academic, and above all was in Russian, which means that a copy-and-paste option was completely unavailable for me…
I’ve started a new investigation, with an idea of reflecting Thackeray’s life and works in a socio-cultural context of that time. But soon I discovered that, for one reason or another, most free data available on the web, was of no use to me. Surprisingly the best options turned out to be a Wikipedia, and, especially, the Victorian web, because the biographies found there are the ones that fit best to the vision I had about the structure of my work. Another two pages I consider interesting and complete are: academic.brooklyn.cuny.edu and literaryhistory.com. The first one contain biography and an overview, meanwhile in the second a reader can find a list of literary criticism, articles by recognized scholars, etc.
So the links I am offering will lead to the pages mentioned above. I’ve also decided to include some other references of a general interest, which, in my opinion, contain easy-to-understand information that could be useful to anyone who is interested in English literature.
